WB Boone Willmott

The loves of Boone’s life were his flying, his river rafting, his farm in Graham and his wife Judy, not necessarily in that order. He was born April 21st, 1927 in Puyallup, WA and lived in the area all his life. He was in the Navy at the end of WWII and later learned to fly on the GI bill. Most of the time he flew just for the fun of it, but he also flew skydivers out of Thun Field for many years, dropped cargo on Mt. Rainier for Tacoma Mt. Rescue, flew on many searches for downed airplanes and also flew for aerial photographer Winfield Brown. Their photographs appeared many times on the cover of the magazine section of the Tacoma News Tribune. He married Judy in 1965 and together they built their lob cabin “dream home” on 40 acres in Graham. It was Boone’s wish to die in his “own little log cabin” instead of in the hospital. He got his wish Sept. 26th, 2002. Boone worked at Fort Lewis as an operating engineer for 38 years. After he retired, he and Judy took up river rafting and many wet and wild weekends were spent paddling with friends. The highlight of his summer for 8 years was a five day raft/kayak trip with friends and relatives down the Salmon River in Idaho. Everyone took good care of Boone because he was the only one who hauled a motor along and ferried everybody out on the last 20 miles of slow water. Boone was a past Master of Corinthian 38 Masonic Lodge in Puyallup, charter member of the Western Travelairs Flying Club and Puget Sound Paddle Club and a former member of the Tacoma Mushroom Society. Boone was preceded in death by his mother Eva Willmott of Puyallup. Survivors include his wife and best friend, Judy; daughter Cindy Bugg; sons Stephen Willmott and Bill Willmott; sister Nina Tucker-Gibbons; brother Carl Willmott; nine grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at the Thrift Community Hall, 13202 224th St. in Graham on Wed., Oct. 2nd at 11 AM. As Boone jokingly requested, “in lieu of flowers, bring food.” A potluck will follow.

David Gunning McCallum, Sr.

May 11, 1939 to February 20, 2006 On February 20th, David G. McCallum, Sr. was delivered into the Lord’s hands. Dave was born in Puyallup, WA to loving parents Marjorie and Donald McCallum. He attended Edgemont Junior High, graduated class salutarian from Puyallup High School in 1957 and went on to earn a degree in chemical engineering from the University of Washington, where he was also a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. In 1961, he married his high school sweetheart, Dena Biehn. In 1964, Dave joined the family insurance business and that was also the year Dave Jr. was born. In the following 4 years, Dave and Dena added two more sons, Doug and Don. The 5 D’s, as they were known, enjoyed camping, Husky football games, and the kids’ soccer and football games, where the most fanatic parent was Dave Sr., always cheering on his boys to do their best. With Dena’s passing in 1997, there was a huge void in Dave’s life. Dave was lucky enough to strike gold again when he met a schoolteacher named Darlene. They married in 2000 and a new chapter in Dave’s life began. With travels to Russia, the Caribbean, Norway, Hungary, Sweden and many other countries they made the most of their retirement. Dave and Darlene enjoyed the following activities with their grandchildren: Daffodil road trips with Meghan, gardening and baking with Lauren, reading books with Brin, practicing the ABC’s with Hadiya, and playing dinosaurs with little Mikey. Happiness is being a grandparent! He was well respected in the insurance industry, elected as President of Professional Insurance Agents of Washington and the Firemark Society and named Professional Insurance Agent of the Year in 1983. While serving two terms on the Puyallup School Board, his highlight was being able to present his son Don with his high school diploma. In 1989 and 1993 Dave was elected School Board President. His community service spanned a commitment of 35 years to the Daffodilians, where he served as President (Sir Boss) in 1974 and 1995. Dave’s fraternal affiliations include the Puyallup Kiwanis, Puyallup Elks, Orting Eagles, Corinthian Lodge F&AM, and Afifi Shrine. Big Dave was a rabid Husky fan and was renowned for his magnificent tailgate parties where friends and family would congregate before the big game. BERT WILLIAM NEVINS "BOMPA" Dad was a wonderful father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He passed away peacefully on April 2, 2006 in Redmond, WA with his family by his side. Born on August 29, 1914 in Alberta, Canada, he spent his childhood in Girard, IL. After graduating from Eureka College in Illinois, where he played football, was a member of the swim team and TKE fraternity, he moved to Puyallup, WA. Bert was very active there holding many lifetime organization affiliations including Kiwanis, Afifi Shrine, Jesters, Scottish Rite Masonic Society (past master), Elks and Lynden Golf and Country Club. After spending numerous years working as a salesman for Hamachek Machine Company, and running Bert Nevins Sporting Goods Store, he retired. Not being one to sit idle, he took on a new challenge working for Harry Corliss until again, he retired at age 87. The years spent working at the Puyallup Fair (where he took his children and grandchildren each year), were some of his happiest times. You could always find Bert involved in community activities such as volunteering at Good Samaritan Hospital in the rehabilitation center or serving coffee with Kiwanis at rest stops. Bert enjoyed many hobbies including spending time fishing with friends and grandchildren, swimming, walking, golfing, gardening and bird watching as well as spending time with family. He will be remembered, terribly missed, and always loved by his two daughters Sandra Craig (son-in-law Eugene Craig), Betsy Homes, his grandchildren Jason (Gina, great grandchildren Katelyn and Jack), Brad (Hilary), Rod (Lena), Blake, Michelle and Nicholas (Jennifer). Dad ("Bompa"), was a great source of strength and wisdom to all of us. He took pride in traditions and times that he knew as a boy, yet was quick to embrace new ideas and welcomed the future with joy. Dad will always be a man to look up to and we think those who knew him would agree that his heart holds the strength of a lifetime. "You will be deeply missed. Thank you for a lifetime of love. May you be as happy in heaven as you were with us. For all you were, and all you did – we love you!"
